The Isabel pattern is a modern reinterpretation of a pea coat and vintage blouse in one. It features an adorable collar as well as a double-breasted front closing. Given its inspiration from both inner and outerwear, it can be made with fabrics of varying weights depending on the user’s intended purpose for the garment. The pattern is available in both long and short sleeve options to assist sewists in achieving their desired outcome.

Sewing level

Level: Intermediate

This instruction file will walk you through all of the steps thoroughly, however, the welt pockets would be considered an Intermediate or Advanced skill. If you think they are outside of your sewing skill limits, the pattern will be just as cute without them. Otherwise, you can use this tutorial as a learning tool to sew your first welt pocket.

Outside of the pocket construction, this is a relatively straightforward project.

Time required

5-6 hours without the pockets

Up to 8 hours with the pockets (depending on skill)

Printing formats

A0, A4, US Letter and Projector file.

Fabric recommendations:

Self

For this project, a wide range of woven/non-stretch fabrics and fabric weights can be chosen, simply based on your desired outcome.

For the white and brown examples, a cotton twill was used, about 250gsm. For the striped top a super soft cotton poplin was used, about 150gsm.

Weight: 200-300gsm for the pattern as is. For 150 gsm-200 gsm, pattern tweaks may need to be made. I talk about this a bit more at the end of the video.

Examples of heavier fabrics: Cotton twill, denim

Examples of lighter fabrics: Cotton poplin, plain cotton

Considerations: Some of the areas will have quite a few layers of fabric to sew through. Please consider choosing a fabric that isn’t more than what your sewing machine can handle sewing through.

Lining

Any fabric advertised as lining fabric can be used however, this can be substituted with your self fabric, if your self fabric is under 150gsm.

Examples: Viscose lining, acetate lining, plain cottons

Interfacing

Fusible interfacing is optional but recommended, especially if your fabric is thinner than 200gsm. Can be either woven or felted/non-woven. Please make sure it is either the same weight or lighter than your self fabric as well as being an appropriate colour that cannot be seen through the self fabric.

Equipment:

General equipment

It is assumed that you own general sewing equipment for this pattern. This includes cutting tools (paper AND fabric), pins, snips, fabric marker, rulers, sewing machine and iron.

Project Specific Equipment

1. Sewing needles

2. Awl

This is simply used to mark points through the pattern, you can simply make the holes in your pattern larger and mark the points using a fabric marker.

3. Overlock

You can also get away with using an overcast foot on your regular domestic sewing machine if it has this functionality (please check your sewing machine manual) however an overlock will be much neater.

FAQ:

The pattern has since updated since I bought it, what can I do?

Drop me a message/email, I'll be happy to send you a new link!

Why can I not see the layers option?

If you are on the app version of Adobe Acrobat, it does not currently support the layers feature; it is only available on desktop.

It says "Read-only" when I try to select the layers. What do I do?

Sometimes Acrobat displays this message. Just click "OK" and then try to select it again, it should work.
