The Dahlia bolero is a layering piece perfect to accompany and elevate a pre-existing wardrobe. It features asymmetrically shirred sleeves and is fastened in the centre front with some ties created from bias binding. It has been designed with a slightly shorter shoulder seam to make sure the puff sleeves do not accentuate the width of the shoulders.

Materials required

Bias binding - 3m

Shirring elastic - 5m

Up to:
1.4m / 1.5 yards of fabric for widths of 112cm / 44”
1.2m / 1.3 yards of fabric for width of 140cm / 54”
0.9m / 1 yards of fabric for width of 150cm / 90"

Fabric and Material Recommendations

The fabric must be woven or non-stretch. Something flowy and very lightweight is recommended to keep the sleeves appropriately shirred and the body not too thick, as it is double layered. Natural fabrics are also recommended for breathability.

A plain cotton lawn was used in the sample, about 70gsm.
Weight: Ideally 60-100gsm.

General Equipment

It is assumed that you own general sewing equipment for this pattern. This includes cutting tools (paper AND fabric), pins, snips, fabric marker, rulers, sewing machine and iron.

Project Specific Equipment

1. Fabric marker / iron off pen
2. Bias binding maker
This is optional but highly recommend it if you are making your own bias binding.
